Colby Covington Advises Tony Ferguson to Retire After First Win in Years
Colby
Covington doesn’t think Tony
Ferguson should continue competing after his first combat
sports win in several years.
Ferguson parted ways with the UFC after an eight-fight losing streak, the longest in the promotion’s history. “El Cucuy” made his pro boxing debut last weekend against YouTuber turned boxer Nathaniel Bustamante, aka Salt Papi. Ferguson finally returned to the win column with a slightly controversial third-round stoppage win over Papi.
Covington congratulated Ferguson on his successful boxing debut
while also recalling the UFC 296 press conference when he and
Ferguson publicly expressed their support for each other. However,
“Chaos” doesn’t think the former UFC interim lightweight champ
should continue competing. Covington believes Ferguson will only
take further damage if he continues fighting. Covington also took a
dig a Justin
Gaethje, suggesting Ferguson shouldn’t compete with “The
Highlight” to be “King of CTE.”
“Happy for him. Congratulations to Tony for actually winning a fight,” Covington said on YouTube. “Even though it was against some influencer that had no combat sports experience. A win’s a win. My advice to Tony is – quit while you're ahead. Ride off into the sunset. Go enjoy time with your family brother. If you get back in there, you're gonna get hurt and no one wants to see you get hurt, Tony, because we like you. No more hits to the head. And no reason to give duck-lipped Gaethje a run for his money for king of CTE."
Covington is 1-3 in his last four, with his only win coming against Jorge Masvidal. The former interim welterweight champ suffered a stoppage loss against up-and-comer Joaquin Buckley in his last outing in December 2024.
